Unfortunately, I have experienced war, but not of a kind most people think.  As a person of color, I have been threatened with death by police in Louisiana for innocently swimming in a white only pool (1970), slammed face down on the ground in an alley for taking a co-worker home who lived in a bad neighborhood (1977), denied employment in Dearborn when I was accepted via the telephone (1980).
My grandfather was murdered for being an Indian who refused to allow his boss to sleep with his wife (1928); my uncle was beaten half to death and made to leave his wife and family for refusing to allow his boss to sleep with his wife (1963);

My maternal family knew that in the North, we’d have a better chance than being home in Louisiana.  I’ve been called nigger, dog, and things I won’t share with you.  At a Christian conference in Tulsa Oklahoma, my husband and I were denied service at a restaurant (they all went in the back and refused to come out when we went for lunch at a steak joint across from the church) 1993; he and I were denied being trained for the SonShine Christian program (their headquarters was in Howell) 1995;

Living in South Lyon until 2009, my sons and daughter were unable to get a job at any fast food restaurant; or grocery store. (The minority population of South Lyon is less than 1% – the lighter skinned minorities were employable, not our darker skinned offspring)

Thanks be to our Lord and Savior Yeshua/Jesus Who was also “despised and rejected of men” as our Supreme Example of how not to allow “bitter roots” to overcome or damage the heart and soul of a man or woman.

I remember that “judgment begins in the House of God” and pray that those who live in that House are checking themselves and doing some personal pruning when it comes to socialized predjudice and segregation.  Unfortunately, even today, the Sabbath day and Sunday are the most segregated days of the week as we lift up our hands to our Hebrew – not “Malibu”  Savior.

We are not excused in our denial of our fellow human beings.  We are not excused.
